The projects are part of a record $4.8 billion investment by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs through the Veterans Health Administration’s Non-recurring Maintenance program for fiscal year 2026.
The Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center says the nationwide initiative is intended to modernize, repair and improve health care facilities across the country.
Officials say the funding approved during the second quarter of FY2026 will support several major projects on the Tuscaloosa VA campus, including elevator upgrades in various buildings, heating, ventilation and air conditioning system replacements, and campuswide fire alarm and overhead paging system improvements.
Additional projects include infrastructure upgrades tied to the VA’s Electronic Health Record Modernization initiative, along with improvements to sanitary sewer systems, water mains and fire protection systems.
“Improved facilities, equipment and infrastructure mean better care for Veterans, and these funds will enable Tuscaloosa VA to achieve that goal,” Interim Medical Center Director Dr. Maisha Moore said in a statement. “Better care for Veterans is our goal, and these projects will enable us to achieve just that.”
Tuscaloosa VA officials did not release a timeline for construction or the total amount allocated specifically to the Tuscaloosa campus.
