TUSCALOOSA, AL — City officials announced that storm shelters in Tuscaloosa will open at noon Monday ahead of anticipated severe weather conditions across West Alabama.

The following shelters will be available beginning at 12 p.m. Monday, May 25:
Officials encouraged residents planning to use the shelters to bring any necessary personal items, including snacks, water, medications and other essential supplies they may need while sheltered.
Residents are also encouraged to closely monitor local weather conditions and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts throughout the day.
The National Weather Service is forecasting a wet and stormy Memorial Day for much of the state, including the Tuscaloosa area, with widespread showers and possible thunderstorms expected throughout Monday and into early Tuesday morning.
Forecasters say showers and isolated thunderstorms are likely during the day Monday, with a high temperature near 81 degrees.
Winds are expected to remain light out of the east at around 5 mph. Rain chances are at 100%, with between one-half and three-quarters of an inch of rainfall possible during the day.
Rain and storm chances are expected to continue Monday night. The NWS forecast calls for showers and possible thunderstorms before 10 p.m., followed by a lingering chance of showers overnight and additional thunderstorm activity possible after 4 a.m. Tuesday.
Overnight lows are expected to dip to around 68 degrees with light southeast winds becoming calm during the evening hours.
Additional rainfall totals between one-quarter and one-half inch are possible overnight.
Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, identify a sturdy shelter location and stay updated on changing conditions throughout the day and overnight.
