The TMAS Foundation says the organization's mission is to enhance the lives of animals at the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter through community engagement, enrichment programs, medical support, volunteer opportunities and fundraising initiatives.

One of the group's first major efforts is the "Campaigning for a Cause – Mayor Dog Campaign," a community fundraising contest that features local businesses and their canine representatives competing for the title of Mayor Dog.

The foundation says the campaign has generated significant community participation, bringing together businesses, pet owners and animal advocates from across Tuscaloosa and Northport.

Organizers said the campaign raised more than $2,500 during its first few days of voting.

The TMAS Foundation said more than 30 dogs representing businesses throughout the area are participating in the competition, with each promoting campaign slogans, endorsements and social media outreach in an effort to secure votes and donations.

The campaign is scheduled to conclude June 30 with a community celebration at Unleashed, where organizers will recognize participants, announce winners and continue fundraising through raffles and other activities.

Foundation officials said the event is designed not only to raise money for shelter animals but also to increase awareness of pet adoption and the needs of animals in local shelters.

Apart from the Mayor Dog competition, the TMAS Foundation is also preparing to launch the TMAS Heroes Program. This monthly giving initiative is aimed at providing year-round financial support for shelter pets.
