Wahl's campaign announced the endorsement Thursday as the hotly contested June 16 runoff approaches against Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen.

McCarron, who briefly sought the lieutenant governor's office himself before ending his campaign in December, called Wahl "a conservative fighter" and said he believes Wahl will stand up for Alabama families.

The high-profile endorsement is just the latest for the former head of the Alabama Republican Party after receiving the early backing of President Donald Trump.

"I am proud to give John Wahl my complete and total endorsement," McCarron said in a statement released by the campaign. "He is not part of the political swamp, and he has proven he is willing to stand strong, take the hits, and keep driving the ball down the field for the people of Alabama."

The endorsement comes months after McCarron ended his own bid for lieutenant governor.

As Patch previously reported, the former Crimson Tide star put his political ambitions on hold after being named head coach of the Birmingham Stallions of the United Football League.

"As a father of young children, I want leaders who will protect our kids, stand up for families, and fight for the values that make Alabama special," McCarron said. "We need a conservative fighter, not another career politician. That's why this is an easy choice."
