In a statement released on social media Sunday, Powell said a man and woman were found dead during the investigation into the incident, which occurred in the early morning hours of July 12.

"I can also confirm that the individual believed to be responsible is in the custody of the Pickens County Jail," Powell said. "We are confident there is no ongoing threat to the public."

Powell said deputies and investigators worked through the night and continue gathering facts as the investigation remains active.

"I ask for your patience as our deputies and investigators continue working diligently to determine all of the facts," Powell said. "We have worked throughout the night and remain committed to conducting a thorough investigation."

The sheriff also urged residents not to spread unverified information, noting that rumors can further traumatize grieving families.

"Several families are grieving today, and the spread of rumors and assumptions only adds to their pain," Powell said. "Please remember that speculation is not fact, and many family members are hearing rumors before they receive confirmed information."

Powell also asked the public to keep those affected in their prayers while allowing investigators time to complete their work.

"We will release additional information as it becomes appropriate to do so," he said.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims or the person in custody.

No charges have been announced as of Sunday afternoon.
