TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — University of Alabama Police Department Chief Scott Thurmond was recently among more than 200 law enforcement professionals to graduate from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

UA says Thurmond was one of 255 law enforcement officers to complete the 298th session of the academy, which included participants from 46 states, the District of Columbia and more than two dozen countries.
The class also featured representatives from military organizations and federal civilian agencies.
Established in 1935, the FBI National Academy has graduated more than 57,000 law enforcement professionals worldwide.
UA said the intensive 10-week curriculum focuses on leadership, communication and physical fitness, with participants selected based on demonstrated professionalism and leadership within their agencies.
"As law enforcement continues to evolve, it's critical that we remain focused on strong leadership, effective communication and community engagement," Thurmond said. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside peers from across the country and around the world, and I look forward to applying what I've gained to further enhance safety and service at UAPD."
University Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and TreasurerDan Layzell said Thurmond's accomplishment underscores his commitment to professional growth and the university community.
"Chief Thurmond's graduation from the FBI National Academy reflects his dedication to professional growth and to leading UAPD at the highest level," Layzell said. "The knowledge and relationships gained through this experience will benefit not only the department but the entire campus community."
UA said participants in the academy typically bring more than two decades of law enforcement experience and often go on to serve in executive leadership positions within their agencies.
The University of Alabama has several other public safety officials who are graduates of the FBI National Academy, including Deputy Police Chief Micah Rodgers, Captain Chad Stephens, Director of Emergency Management Donald Keith, Security Resources Operations Manager Mike Lee and Vice Chancellor for Security Operations Steven Anderson.
