Alabama Makes Easy Work Of East Carolina To Win Season Opener

The Crimson Tide led just 10-0 after the first quarter before erupting for 28 points in the second, including three rushing touchdowns and a defensive score, to take a commanding 38-7 advantage into halftime.

Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell, making his first career start, finished 17-of-29 passing for 249 yards and added another 86 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

While the Crimson Tide did not throw a touchdown pass in the opener, its ground game accounted for five scores and 227 yards on 49 attempts.

Playing without gloves in a college game for the first time in his career, wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams led Alabama's receivers with five catches for 130 yards, including a 58-yard reception.

Derek Meadows also turned heads by adding three catches for 44 yards, while Lotzeir Brooks and Rico Scott each caught two passes.

Alabama took the opening kickoff and methodically drove 46 yards in nine plays before Conor Talty connected on a 41-yard field goal with 9:30 remaining in the first quarter.

The Crimson Tide found the end zone on its next possession, putting together an eight-play, 86-yard march capped by freshman EJ Crowell's 3-yard touchdown run with 4:12 remaining in the opening quarter.

Alabama then broke the game open in the second half.

Daniel Hill scored on a 4-yard run with 14:48 remaining in the half to make it 17-0 before East Carolina answered with its only touchdown of the afternoon, a 1-yard pass from quarterback Marlon Griffis.

Hill struck again on Alabama's ensuing possession, scoring from 2 yards out to restore the Crimson Tide's 17-point advantage at 24-7.

The defense then joined the scoring.

Linebacker Yhonzae Pierre intercepted Griffis and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown with 9:15 remaining in the second quarter, pushing Alabama's lead to 31-7.

Pierre finished with three tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss and the interception.

Alabama was mostly vanilla on offense and essentially put the game away before halftime with a punishing 15-play, 80-yard drive that consumed 6:11. Russell finished it himself with a 3-yard touchdown run with 14 seconds remaining, sending the Crimson Tide to the locker room ahead 38-7.

East Carolina managed a 34-yard field goal from Noah Perez following an Alabama fumble early in the third quarter, but that proved to be the Pirates' final points.

Alabama added another touchdown early in the fourth when freshman running back Trae'shawn Brown scored on a 2-yard run, capping a nine-play, 77-yard drive.

The Crimson Tide outgained East Carolina 480-162, including a staggering 227-2 advantage on the ground. Alabama ran 80 offensive plays to ECU's 41, picked up 27 first downs to the Pirates' five and possessed the football for 38:53.

Alabama also converted 8-of-15 third downs, while East Carolina went 0-for-9.

The Crimson Tide's rushing production was spread across the lineup.

Russell led the team with 86 yards, while Hill rushed nine times for 47 yards and two touchdowns. Crowell had 37 yards and a score on seven attempts, and Brown finished with 15 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.

Alabama was especially effective in the red zone, scoring on all six of its trips, with five touchdowns and a field goal.

Defensively, Alabama held East Carolina to an average of just 4 yards per play and recorded three sacks and five tackles for loss.

Pierre, Zabien Brown and Dijon Lee Jr. each finished with three tackles, while Pierre accounted for the game's only interception.

The Pirates finished with minus-22 yards on tackles for loss and managed only one rushing first down all afternoon.

The Crimson Tide (1-0, 0-0 SEC) will return to action next week when Alabama travels to Lexington to take on the Kentuck Wildcats to open Southeastern Conference play.

Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. local time.
