The SEC announced Monday that Alabama linebacker Xavier Griffin was named Co-Freshman of the Week, while defensive lineman London Simmons earned Defensive Lineman of the Week honors.

Griffin came off the bench to lead Alabama with nine tackles, including six solo stops. He also recorded a sack for a 5-yard loss and added a quarterback hurry.

Simmons made an early impact against the Bulldogs, forcing and recovering a fumble while sacking Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor on the Bulldogs' first offensive possession.

The defensive lineman finished with two tackles and a team-high 1.5 sacks for 12 yards in losses in his return to his home state of Mississippi.

Griffin and Simmons helped Alabama's defense record a season-high five sacks in the win.

The weekly SEC honors are the first of both players' careers and mark the fifth and sixth conference weekly awards earned by Crimson Tide players this season.
