The Tuscaloosa Police Department told Patch that a physical altercation occurred at the school Tuesday morning and was initially handled by school resource officers.

TPD said parents of some students then began arriving at the school, leading to a verbal altercation in the parking lot.

Additional patrol officers responded around 8:30 a.m. and were able to quickly de-escalate the situation.

No one was arrested, and TPD said no arrests are expected.

Tuscaloosa City Schools said after the three altercations involving students, visitors were temporarily prevented from entering the school out of an abundance of caution while the incidents were being addressed.

The school district then said TPD responded to provide additional support.

TCS said the students involved were sent home and will face disciplinary action in accordance with the Tuscaloosa City Schools Student Code of Conduct.

School officials stressed that all students and staff were safe following the incident and that Central High School resumed its normal instructional day.

"This serves as an important reminder that fighting or physical altercations of any kind have no place at school," TCS said in a statement to parents. "We take incidents such as these seriously, and students who engage in this behavior will face appropriate consequences."
