The Carbon Hill Police Department has identified Dustin Patrick Tucker, 38, as the man authorities are attempting to locate following the incident, which occurred at a residence on Seventh Avenue Northwest.
WBRC Fox 6 News first reported that the incident unfolded Wednesday after the homeowner reportedly experienced a burglary at the same residence the previous day.
The Birmingham television station said the homeowner stayed home from work Wednesday following Tuesday's burglary.
Investigators said two people subsequently arrived at the residence and kicked in the front door, prompting the homeowner to open fire.
Kenya Pughwas, 32, was shot and killed during the incident, while the second person fled the scene.
Police said the homeowner had a firearm accessible after hearing noises outside the residence. The emergency call was received at approximately 12:24 p.m.
Investigators have not determined whether the individuals involved in Wednesday's home invasion were also responsible for the burglary reported Tuesday.
Carbon Hill police subsequently issued a public appeal for information regarding Tucker's whereabouts, releasing photographs of both the man and a pickup truck he was last seen driving.
The Carbon Hill Police Department says Tucker is approximately 5 feet, 5 inches to 5 feet, 6 inches tall.
The vehicle — pictured below — was identified as a maroon-and-tan 1988 Ford F-150 pickup truck bearing an Earl Lee Auto Sales drive-off tag.
Authorities indicated Tucker could be traveling between Carbon Hill and Winfield and may have contacts in Florence.
The Carbon Hill Police Department is asking anyone with information about Tucker's whereabouts or the location of the pickup truck to contact investigators at (205) 924-4411.
Anyone who encounters Tucker or the vehicle is encouraged to contact law enforcement rather than approach him.
