According to a statement released Friday by Selma City Schools, the game ended before halftime following reports of a shooting.
School officials emphasized that the shooting was not connected to the football game.
The Selma Police Department then responded to the incident, which remains under investigation.
"We want to ensure the safety of everyone who attends our athletic events," Selma City Schools Superintendent David Scott said in a statement. "We are appreciative of the Selma Police Department taking action to make sure everyone was safe."
The district did not provide information about possible injuries, arrests or the circumstances surrounding the gunfire.
"The safety of our students, families, staff, athletes, and community remains our top priority," the district said. "We appreciate everyone's cooperation and understanding."
It is unclear how Friday's cancellation will impact the outcome of the game and the records for the two teams.
