The funding, awarded during the fourth quarter of the fiscal year, will support three projects at the Tuscaloosa facility, including renovations to Building 18's laundry facilities, campuswide fire alarm upgrades and improvements to accessibility and critical access at Building 61.
This allocation follows funding the medical center received earlier in the year through the Veterans Health Administration's Non-Recurring Maintenance program.
"This funding allows TVAMC to continue advancing our modernization efforts, ensuring our facility remains safe, efficient, and fully equipped to deliver high-quality care for the Veterans of west Alabama," interim Medical Center Director Maisha Moore said.
According to the VA, the agency obligated the entire $4.8 billion available for maintenance projects during fiscal year 2026.
Nationwide projects approved during the fourth quarter included $1.183 billion for repairing and upgrading outdated infrastructure systems at medical facilities, along with $938 million for major building improvements involving elevators, electrical systems and boiler plants.
The VA says another $560 million was designated for facility modernization projects supporting future electronic health record system upgrades.
The VA did not specify the dollar amount allocated to the Tuscaloosa projects or provide a timeline for their completion.
