The Democrat who represents Alabama's 7th Congressional District visited the library this week to announce the funding alongside Tuscaloosa Public Library Executive Director Jennifer Pearson, who emphasized the need to upgrade the facility's sanitary and plumbing systems.
"It is very important," Pearson said of the funding. "We've had to close in the last few years several times due to plumbing issues, and so we need to make these changes and improvements."
Sewell also shared a lighthearted moment with Pearson about the nature of the improvements.
"I told her I'm coming back to flush," Sewell joked.
Beyond the infrastructure improvements, Sewell also spoke about her personal connection to libraries, explaining that her mother worked as a librarian for 40 years.
"It gives me great joy to help our libraries," Sewell said. "Libraries literally can transform lives. I'm a living example. I traveled through libraries, traveled through books, way before I had a passport."
