A pedestrian was struck and killed just before 5 a.m. Thursday while walking in the southbound lanes of Alabama Highway 69

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Tuscaloosa Police say a pedestrian was struck and killed just before 5 a.m. Thursday while walking in the southbound lanes of Alabama Highway 69 South.

The Tuscaloosa Police Department says the driver of the vehicle continued driving after striking the man, but stopped a short distance from the scene. The driver then walked away from his vehicle for a brief moment, before returning to speak with a sheriff's deputy who had stopped.

TPD said this is not being considered a hit-and-run and the driver is being cooperative with investigators.

The identity of the victim has not been released as TPD works to identify him and notify his family.

As far as traffic impacts go, northbound lanes on Highway 69 remain open, while southbound traffic is being re-routed.
