📰 News we're reading

1. Anchorage Assembly approves $600K police crime center upgrade, holds off on updating privacy protections (alaskapublic.org) — Anchorage residents will see a major expansion of the police real-time crime center after the Assembly approved nearly $600,000 for new surveillance technology, despite privacy concerns from several members. The upgrade will centralize access to hundreds of cameras citywide, while a separate ordinance to tighten data-access and retention rules is being reworked with the mayor's office for a Sept. 15 hearing.

2. Alaska schools set to receive $115M in war-driven oil revenue bonus, state announces (adn.com) — Anchorage schools are set to receive about $32 million from a one-time $115 million statewide funding boost tied to higher oil revenues, easing some budget pressure this year. Local leaders say the money may help with staffing, activities, and operations, but warn that one-time funds don't solve long-term instability or the challenges caused by years of underfunding and rising costs.

3. Don Megga Returns to KFAT 92.9 Anchorage (barrettmedia.com) — Anchorage radio listeners will soon hear a familiar voice again as longtime KFAT 92.9 personality Don Megga returns as afternoon host and Production/Imaging Director. Station leaders say his comeback is meant to reconnect with Anchorage audiences and stabilize Ohana Media Group's local cluster during a period of change, though broader strategy and staffing plans remain unclear.

4. How one Anchorage nonprofit is rebuilding trust with its raptors (alaskapublic.org) — In south Anchorage, the Bird Treatment and Learning Center is reshaping how it works with injured and non-releasable raptors, using positive reinforcement to build trust instead of force. Staff and longtime volunteers say the new approach has transformed the personalities of ambassador birds like snowy owl Frost and bald eagle Culuk, while deepening their own connection to local wildlife and Alaska Native traditions.

5. Feds announce broadband funding to map and connect gap communities in Alaska (alaskasnewssource.com) — Announced in Anchorage, new federal broadband rules will let Alaska redirect BEAD program savings to more than 5,000 newly mapped, unserved homes and villages, expanding eligibility for high-speed internet funding. Officials say the change, paired with an "all of the above" technology strategy, will improve connectivity for education, healthcare, business, and national security, though permitting delays still threaten project timelines.
