📰 News we're reading

• Update: Two missing teenagers in Juneau found dead (ktoo.org) — Two 16-year-olds reported missing from Juneau's Mendenhall Valley on Monday were later found dead from apparent gunshot wounds in a wooded area near Lemon Creek, according to police. Juneau Police say the investigation continues, with autopsies pending, and the Juneau School District is preparing counseling support. Residents are urged to use crisis hotlines if they or someone they know needs help.

• Coast Guard terminates commercial passenger vessel in Sitka (alaska-native-news.com) — Based out of Juneau, Coast Guard Sector Southeast Alaska recently halted a foreign-built passenger vessel in Sitka for operating outside its authorized area, then escorted it safely back to harbor. Officials are urging Juneau and regional passengers to verify their charter's credentials and safety compliance, and to report any suspicious or unauthorized commercial operations through Coast Guard hotlines or the CGIS Tips system.

• After Nepal's disaster, scientists are watching a growing threat in glacial lakes (san.com) — Juneau is highlighted as one of North America's highest-risk spots for glacial lake outburst floods, with Suicide Basin releases regularly threatening homes, roads and the Mendenhall River corridor. Scientists link these dangers to global glacier melt, while local officials rely on monitoring, alerts and evacuation planning—offering both a warning and a model for other vulnerable mountain communities worldwide.
