Dog In Tortoise Hole Rescued By Firefighters

Toby Passmore tried desperately to get his dog out of a hole, but the dog had other priorities.

CHANDLER, AZ — Toby Passmore, a dog owner in Chandler, tried get his dog out of a tunnel dug by a giant tortoise in his backyard. But when the canine wouldn't come out, Passmore decided he needed to call the fire department Wednesday to come to the rescue.

It turned out that while Passmore was only thinking about getting his dog out of the hole, his dog had other priorities.

With the help of a city backhoe, firefighters began unearthing the 6-foot-deep tunnel dug by Passmore's tortoise. That allowed Passmore to squirm head-first into the hole and see that his Scottish Schnauzer "was willfully inside the hole" — not stuck — where it had cornered a cat.
