Repeal Arizona School Voucher Program, Parents Group Says

A report says a group of public education advocates will seek to overturn the massive expansion of the voucher program signed last month.

Not even one month after Arizona passed a massive expansion of its school voucher program, a major effort is underway to get it repealed, according to a new report. A group, Save Our Schools Arizona will file paperwork this week so they can begin gathering signatures to get their repeal proposal on the ballot in November 2018.

The group is organizing a rally and news conference at the state Capitol.

The Arizona Republic reports that the group is being formed by parents who believe the expansion disproportionately benefits wealthy family and could dismantle public education.

The legislation - approved last month and signed by Governor Ducey - makes all 1.1 million K-12 students in the state eligible to apply for the program but puts a cap on the number who can participate. The law states only 5,000 new students each year can take part with the total being limited to 30,000 in 2022.

Once they file the paperwork the group will have 90 days to collect 75,000 signatures to qualify for the ballot.

If they are successful, the question of whether or not to repeal the expansion will be on the ballot at the same time as Governor Ducey's likely re-election effort.
