Today's riddle: What do you call a belt that is made of watches? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. This popular chain is opening its first restaurant in Buckeye (azcentral.com) — A new Oregano's restaurant is nearing completion at Buckeye Commons, near North Verrado Way and West Roosevelt Street, bringing the chain's first location directly to Buckeye. Surrounded by Costco, Dick's Sporting Goods, Raising Cane's, and In-N-Out, the spot will add another dining option for Verrado-area residents once Oregano's confirms an opening date.
2. Buckeye Plans to Dramatically Improve Airport (azbex.com) — Buckeye plans to invest nearly $30 million over the next five years to expand Buckeye Airport, including a new control tower and longer runway that could eventually support passenger, military, and commercial flights. Most funding would come from federal and state grants, with road expansions and possible Interstate 11 access reshaping nearby neighborhoods; community meetings and City Council workshops are underway now.
3. Jury finds driver guilty of manslaughter in fatal Buckeye crash (inbuckeye.com) — A jury has convicted Nathan Gabriel Chaidez of reckless manslaughter and aggravated assault in a high-speed 2024 crash on Verrado Way in Buckeye that killed 18-year-old Yaritza Vasquez and seriously injured her brother. The conviction and prison sentence, issued earlier this summer, follow a lengthy investigation and grand jury indictment stemming from the late-night incident.
4. Buckeye police launch 2026 Pink Patch Project (inbuckeye.com) — Buckeye residents can support breast cancer survivors this October through the police department's 2026 Pink Patch Project, featuring new shirts, coins, and patches sold online. All proceeds benefit Bosom Buddies of Arizona and other breast cancer support, education, and advocacy efforts, building on last year's record donation from Buckeye police.
5. Former Arizona Department of Corrections employee accused of sharing inmate use-of-force videos (abc15.com) — An investigation at the Morey Unit of Lewis prison in Buckeye led to the arrest of a former corrections employee accused of sharing inmate use-of-force videos. A judge has so far declined to find probable cause on the felony charge, but prosecutors may refile as the case moves toward October court dates in Maricopa County.
