📰 News we're reading

• 2026-08-24 FS-545-Road-Closure (nps.gov subscription) — If you’re heading from Flagstaff toward Sunset Crater Volcano, expect Forest Road 545 to be closed to vehicles Sept. 21–Oct. 21 for culvert work tied to post‑fire flooding damage. The monument will stay open via a longer detour through Wupatki on unpaved Forest Road 776, so plan extra time and avoid taking RVs or trailers on the detour.

• Sentencing set for polygamous leader convicted of abuse in Arizona after girls discovered in trailer (dailynews.com) — A high‑profile polygamous sect leader is set for state sentencing after a 2022 Flagstaff traffic stop where officers found three girls, ages 11 to 14, in a stifling, poorly ventilated trailer. He’s already serving 50 years in federal prison, and now faces additional mandatory prison time on three Arizona child abuse counts.

• Theater founder returns, leads expansion (northcentralnews.net) — A Phoenix-based puppet theater is expanding its touring shows, school programs, and workshops to reach Flagstaff and other Northern Arizona communities year-round. With its founder returning as interim executive director, the organization plans more performances in local schools, libraries, and community venues while strengthening its statewide presence.
