Perhaps every piece of art, gathered beside others, carries something of the life it once witnessed: a gesture, a room, a particular silence, the presence of someone who has since become a memory. We imagine that we keep these things because they belong to us, as if they are fragments of our past that we have chosen not to abandon. Yet perhaps the opposite is true. Perhaps, in keeping works of art, we allow them to keep a part of us.
