2 Phoenix Safeway Stores To Close
Albertsons Companies, which owns Safeway, said closing two locations in the Phoenix area will strengthen operations.

PHOENIX, AZ — A trend toward online grocery shopping and home meal kits is putting pressure on brick-and-mortar grocery stores, including Safeway, which plans to close two stores in the Phoenix area. The affected stores are at 3131 E. Thunderbird Road in Phoenix proper, and 5860 W. Thunderbird Road in Glendale.
Additionally, Albertsons, which is owned by the same company as Safeway, will close a store in Tucson.
The two stores merged in 2015 and are owned by Albertsons Companies

“The decision was difficult and involved a lengthy evaluation,” the release said. “Ultimately the closures will strengthen operational efficiencies.”
