ALDI Likely To Make Big Move Into Phoenix Area
Reports say ALDI is likely to open up to 40 branches in Arizona by 2020.

PHOENIX, AZ — Arizona is the latest location German grocery giant ALDI is eyeing for expansion, with more than several locations in mind. ALDI is looking at eight different spots for now, with its regional headquarters and distribution center likely landing in Goodyear.
KTAR reported that ALDI may open as many as 40 stores by 2020. The grocer has not officially announced plans to move into Arizona, but applications, permits and design submissions show that ALDI is seriously considering the expansion.
If you haven't heard of ALDI, it's a grocery chain that advertises itself as one that cuts costs in order to keep customers paying low prices. Customers bring their own bags, or buy them at the store. Speaking of bags, you'll be filling them yourself, as the store doesn't have baggers, another cost saver.

For shopping carts, customers are required to insert a quarter into a locking system which releases a cart, and releases the quarter when the cart is returned.

ALDI typically has fewer selections than many of the other big box stores, and offers a brand of its own, KTAR reported.
ALDI has almost 1,700 stores in the U.S., AZ Central reported.
According to AZ Central, here's a list of potential ALDI locations and some expect square-footage measurements:
Phoenix
- 1401 E. Bell Rd. in the north side at 22,399 square feet.
- Corner of 59th Avenue and Baseline Road in Laveen.
Tempe
- The city approved remodeling design for a building at 1715 E. Southern Ave. for a 27.572 square-foot store.
Peoria
- The store's expected to be part of a new development on Lake Pleasant Pkwy. near Happy Valley Road.
Glendale
- The store would be at the northeast corner of 67th Avenue and Thunderbird Road as part of a commercial development.
Chandler
- At the northwest corner of Queen Creek and Gilbert roads, the store would open as part of the development the Rockefeller Chandler Crossroads. It would be 22,152 square feet.
Gilbert
- Under review is a proposal for development at 1225 N. Arizona Ave., which would be a 22,435 square-foot ALDI with other shops.
Goodyear
- The regional headquarters and distribution center would go along Loop 303, as well as a 22,152 square-foot store at Estrella Commons Goodyear.
Buckeye
- The store would be at the intersection of Watson and Yuma roads, as well as other businesses in a commercial corner off of I-10.
