Extreme Heat Warning Remains In Phoenix As Temperatures Near Record Highs

Forecasters said Phoenix could hit 109 Monday before temperatures ease later this week under dry skies.

PHOENIX, AZ — Phoenix is staring down one of the hottest days of the year — and potentially one for the record books.

Monday is expected to be the peak of a dangerous heat event gripping the Valley, with forecasters at the National Weather Service raising Phoenix's high to 109 degrees, just one degree shy of the daily record.

An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through Tuesday, and if you're planning to be outside at any point today, have a plan to get indoors.

The culprit is a powerful upper-level ridge pushing east across the region, sending lower desert temperatures 15 degrees above normal.

Across the broader Phoenix metro and western deserts, highs could hit anywhere from 105 to 112 degrees.

The good news: relief is coming, slowly.

Temperatures will begin backing off after today, with Tuesday's high forecast in the 104 to 107 degree range. By Wednesday, Phoenix should settle near 100 degrees as a broader trough moves into the Desert Southwest.

Thursday and Friday look more bearable, with highs in the 95 to 99 degree range, though a slight warmup this weekend could push some communities back to triple digits.

Phoenix residents can expect gusty easterly winds through Monday morning, with 15 to 20 mph gusts in the city and stronger bursts over higher terrain.

Those winds, combined with single-digit afternoon humidity and dry vegetation, are raising serious fire weather concerns. Tuesday in particular looks dangerous across western districts, where conditions could reach elevated to near-critical fire weather levels.

The heat poses the greatest risk to the elderly, young children, outdoor workers, and those without access to air conditioning. The National Weather Service urges residents to limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles.
