PHOENIX, AZ — Enjoy the break while it lasts.
A large weather system stalling over California is about to shake up the Desert Southwest, bringing gusty winds, cooler temperatures and elevated fire weather conditions to the Phoenix area starting Tuesday afternoon.
The National Weather Service says winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected across southern and central Arizona, with stronger gusts of 30 to 45 mph hitting northwest Arizona and southeast California.
Phoenix will feel the cooldown Wednesday, with daytime highs dropping into the lower 90s — a noticeable dip from recent temperatures. Western desert communities could see highs fall into the mid to upper 80s.
The wind isn't just uncomfortable. Forecasters flagged elevated fire weather conditions as humidity drops to between 10 and 20 percent while gusts pick up, a dangerous combination for fire spread. Blowing dust is also possible in some western areas, with reduced visibility a concern for drivers and pilots.
The relief, however, is short-lived.
Temperatures are expected to stay below normal through Friday, with highs in the mid to upper 80s across the western deserts and lower 90s across the Phoenix area. Then the heat comes roaring back.
Forecasters expect highs to climb back toward 100 degrees by Sunday, and reach 104 to 108 degrees by next Tuesday.
No watches, warnings or advisories are currently in effect for Arizona.
