Firefighters extinguished the flames and worked to extricate a person trapped inside, Phoenix Fire Capt. DJ Lee said.

Four people were treated at the scene. Two women and one man were taken to a hospital, while another person died at the scene.

People in the second vehicle were seriously hurt and also taken to the hospital. Officials have not released the names of those involved and have not said which vehicle the person who died was in.

The intersection remained active with emergency crews for hours Tuesday night as they worked to clear the scene.

What led up to the crash is still under investigation, and no additional details about the injured victims were available early Wednesday.
