4 New Homes In Phoenix Mark Latest Win In City’s Affordable Housing Push

City-owned lots identified through the Housing Phoenix Plan were used for three of the four new homes.

PHOENIX, AZ — Four families are about to get the keys to a new home in Sunnyslope — and the lots they'll be built on were sitting empty not long ago.

Phoenix and Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona dedicated four new single-family homes in the neighborhood on May 30, the latest milestone in the city's push to turn vacant, city-owned land into affordable housing.

Each home has three bedrooms, a den that can flex as a fourth, and two and a half bathrooms, officials said.

The project is part of the Housing Phoenix Plan, a strategy the city adopted in 2020 with a goal of creating or preserving 50,000 homes by 2030.

Phoenix says it hit that target five years early.

Three of the four new Habitat homes were built on parcels the city flagged for redevelopment through that effort — and city officials say these are the first completed homeownership units to come out of the program. Earlier projects focused on rental housing.

"This project shows what we can accomplish when we work together," said District 3 Councilwoman Debra Stark. "We are grateful for our partnership with Habitat for Humanity and the many residents and volunteers who helped make these homes possible."

Habitat has deeper roots in Sunnyslope than just these four homes. Todd Rogers, the organization's president and CEO, said the neighborhood has been a long-running partner. Together, he said, they have built more than a dozen affordable homes in Sunnyslope and completed more than 80 home repairs for families in the area.

That repair work is continuing. Habitat is investing $200,000 in Sunnyslope through home repair services, with eight repairs already finished and four more underway.

The four families moving in are expected to get their keys in the coming weeks.
