$850K Makeover For Phoenix Fire Station 46 Puts Focus On Firefighter Wellness

City officials said planning is continuing for Fire Station 46 renovations, with timelines to come later.

PHOENIX, AZ — Fire Station 46 in Ahwatukee is getting a long-overdue makeover, with $850,000 in federal funding set to modernize one of the area's most established fire stations.

The money, secured by Rep. Greg Stanton, will fund dormitory upgrades and accessibility improvements at the station, with a focus on firefighter wellness and ADA compliance.

The dormitory work targets one of the less visible challenges of firefighting — chronic sleep disruption. Firefighters working irregular, high-stress schedules often struggle to get quality rest between calls.

The planned upgrades will add design elements aimed at reducing noise and improving sleep quality for crews stationed there.

The funding will also bring Station 46 into full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, improving equity and usability throughout the facility.

"Fire Station 46 has been a cornerstone of service for this area for decades," said Phoenix City Councilmember Kevin Robinson, whose district includes the station. "These upgrades are overdue, and we're thankful for Congressman Stanton's support in making sure our first responders have the modern infrastructure they deserve."

Mayor Kate Gallego called the funding an important investment in the people who protect the community every day, adding that the city appreciates Stanton's partnership in securing the resources.

The city said design details and construction timelines will be shared as planning moves forward.
