City of Phoenix is hiring for summer aquatics jobs, with some positions open to applicants as young as 15.

PHOENIX, AZ — Looking for a summer job? Phoenix is hiring across its pools and aquatics centers, with openings for lifeguards, swim instructors, pool managers and even a mascot.

The city says the jobs come with flexible summer shifts, and several positions are open to applicants as young as 15.

For those without certification, the city says lifeguard training is the first step, with classes offered year-round. For a limited time, certification costs just $20, a discount the city credits to support from the Phoenix Parks Foundation.

Applicants with an active lifeguard certification from StarGuard Elite can skip the city’s course and apply directly. Once certified, applicants can search “Aquatics” in the city’s online job system to find open positions.

Pay varies by role. Lifeguards earn $17.72 an hour, while shallow water lifeguards make $16.88. Swim lesson instructors, who need a separate Starfish Swim Instructor certification, earn $19.54 an hour.

Entry-level openings include pool cashier and the mascot role “Buddy Bear,” both paying $15.69 an hour and requiring applicants to be at least 15.

Cashiers handle customer service and register guests for swim programs using a point-of-sale system, while Buddy Bear performs in costume at pools and special events across the city.

More experienced applicants can aim higher. Assistant pool managers earn $21.54 an hour, and pool managers make $23.74 or $26.18 depending on the position. Program specialists earn $23.74 an hour, and equipment operators, who need a valid driver’s license, make $18.60 an hour.

The city notes that completing certification or submitting an application does not guarantee a job offer.
