Longtime Hibachi Restaurant Kobe Shuts Down After 2 Decades In Phoenix Metro

The longtime South Tempe hibachi and sushi restaurant said it closed June 27 after serving the community for 22 years.

PHOENIX, AZ — A longtime Phoenix area restaurant known for birthday dinners, graduations and anniversary celebrations has closed after more than two decades.

Kobe Teppan & Sushi, 1125 W. Elliot Rd., Tempe, AZ 85284, served its last meal June 27, ending a 22-year run in the Phoenix metro.

The restaurant announced the closure in a Facebook post that offered little warning and no explanation.

“Last Call tonight, we will be closing after 22 years at 9 p.m. Thank you for all the support and memories over the years, and letting us celebrate special occasions with you,” the post read.

For years, Kobe drew customers with its teppanyaki-style cooking, in which chefs prepared hibachi shrimp, chicken and New York steak on a griddle in front of diners.

The restaurant also served sushi, sashimi and specialty cocktails, along with miso soup, hibachi vegetables and steamed rice.

The post did not say why the restaurant is closing or whether it plans to reopen elsewhere. It also did not mention what will happen to the space.
