PHOENIX, AZ — West Valley drivers should plan for a major freeway closure this weekend.

Eastbound Interstate 10 will be closed between 99th and 75th avenues from 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, through 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, as crews continue work on the Loop 101 (Agua Fria) and I-10 system interchange project.

The closure is part of a larger Arizona Department of Transportation project aimed at improving traffic flow, safety and connections between the two major freeways. The work is being done in partnership with the Maricopa Association of Governments, along with Phoenix, Tolleson, Avondale, Goodyear and Glendale.

Drivers who normally use eastbound I-10 through this stretch of the West Valley should allow extra time, seek alternate routes or adjust travel plans during the weekend closure.

The interchange project is designed to improve how traffic moves through the busy Loop 101 and I-10 corridor, including reducing weaving conflicts for HOV traffic and preparing the area for future freeway improvements.

Planned upgrades include a new Direct HOV ramp connecting northbound Loop 101 traffic to eastbound I-10, along with widening both freeways to support the new connection. Crews will also build a new connector ramp near 91st Avenue, extend the southbound Loop 101 off-ramp at McDowell Road and add noise walls where needed.

The project is part of the Regional Transportation Plan for Maricopa County and is funded through Proposition 400, the county's half-cent transportation sales tax approved by voters in 2004.

Officials have not announced a completion date for the overall interchange project. For now, drivers should plan around the eastbound I-10 closure from Friday night through early Monday morning.
