📰 News we're reading

1. America's Desert Metropolis Is on the Short List to Lose Water (seattletimes.com) — Phoenix faces major uncertainty over its Colorado River supply as federal cuts target the Central Arizona Project canal that provides about 40% of the city's water. Local leaders, nearby towns like Cave Creek, and tribal communities south of Phoenix are scrambling for backup sources, warning residents to expect higher costs, stricter conservation, and long legal battles over Arizona's share of the river.

2. New shade canopies coming to downtown Phoenix (abc15.com) — Downtown Phoenix walkers heading to Chase Field, the convention center, or light rail stops can expect new relief from the heat as six shade canopies are planned along Jefferson and Washington streets. Funded by an APS beautification grant, the durable, UV-blocking structures should be installed by late 2026, with Downtown Phoenix Inc. hoping this first phase spurs more shade projects across the city's hottest corridors.

3. Fired Phoenix officers appear in court; 88 mph winds hit Arizona winery (fox10phoenix.com) — Phoenix readers are seeing new court details emerge about two city officers accused of assaulting a couple during a traffic stop, alongside another scorching 113-degree day and severe weather risks. The roundup also highlights ASU students returning to nearby Tempe and storm damage at an Arizona winery, plus a deadly shooting in Avondale and an extreme-heat medical emergency.

4. Arizona Lottery Pick 3 Evening, Fantasy 5 results for Aug. 23, 2026 (azcentral.com) — Phoenix lottery players can now check the Aug. 23 Pick 3 and Fantasy 5 results and see exactly how to claim any winnings in person at two Phoenix lottery offices or by mail. The article also explains Powerball basics, prize limits at each office, and where to find past winning numbers statewide.
