Jay DeShong, director of esports operations at Grand Canyon University, has joined Arizona’s Children Association’s board of directors, bringing a deeply personal connection to the organization's mission of protecting children, empowering youth and strengthening families.

Raised in Mississippi by a single mother facing significant challenges, DeShong experienced firsthand the instability that can place children at risk. Following the loss of his mother, he was adopted by his grandparents, an experience that shaped his understanding of how critical support systems can be in changing the trajectory of a child's life. DeShong credits that support with helping him build a successful career and inspiring his commitment to helping other young people find opportunity, stability and hope.

“Throughout my life, I’ve seen how quickly a child’s future can change when they have access to the right support, resources and people who believe in them. My own journey could have looked very different without the family members who stepped in when I needed them most,” said Jay DeShong. “Joining the Arizona’s Children Association’s board gives me an opportunity to help create those same opportunities for children and young adults across Arizona. Every child deserves someone willing to invest in their future, and I’m honored to be part of an organization that does that every day.”

As a board member, DeShong hopes to help expand awareness of Arizona’s Children Association and create additional pathways for youth to access career exploration, workforce development and educational opportunities. He is particularly passionate about helping young people transitioning into adulthood gain the experiences and connections needed to build successful futures.

“Jay brings a unique perspective to our board because he understands both the challenges many young people face and the transformative power of opportunity,” said Tracy Thurston, president and CEO of Arizona’s Children Association. “His story, leadership and commitment to helping others make him an incredible advocate for the children, youth and families we serve. We are thrilled to welcome him to our board and look forward to the impact he will help create in communities throughout Arizona.”

Through DeShong's relationship with Arizona's Children Association, DeShong also helped found Gaming for Arizona's Children, an annual two-day esports tournament held in collaboration with the Arizona Cardinals that serves as a unique fundraising and awareness platform benefiting foster youth and children in need.

Now entering its third year, the event has brought together gamers, community partners and supporters from across Arizona, with competition opening at GCU's Esports Arena before the top finalists advance to the main stage at State Farm Stadium. This year's tournament is set for the weekend when the Cardinals host the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, November 15. Day one takes place Saturday, November 14 at GCU Esports Arena, and day two unfolds on game day at State Farm Stadium. A pre-event fundraiser and networking reception will kick off the weekend on Friday, November 13.
