Brush Fire Causes Evacuations, Road Closures In Navajo County

A tailgate being dragged caused a 250-acre fire in Navajo County on Monday, causing big road closures and evacuations.

NAVAJO COUNTY, AZ — Evacuations and road closures are resulting from a Navajo County brush fire Monday afternoon, according to reports. AZ Central reported officials as saying the fire was caused by a human.

State Route 377 was completely closed, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation, before 2 p.m. State Route 277 was closed as well between Snowflake and Heber-Overgaard was closed.

AZ Central reported the Navajo County Sheriff's Office as saying the blaze was sparked by somebody dragging a tailgate from a trailer.

Arizona State Forestry's latest estimate is that the fire has spread to 650 acres as of Monday night.

They're reminding residents not to drag anything from their vehicles, as sparks can cause fires in hot conditions.

Residents of DeSpain Ranch Road were evacuated to Martinez Hall at the Navajo County Fairgrounds.

The Arizona DOT recommends that motorists take SR-77 to SR-260 instead of driving in the area of the fire.
