Here are the top three stories today in Phoenix:
- The Phoenix Police Department reports that Chief Jeri Williams is planning to retire this summer. Williams said on Twitter she feels "called right now to go in a new direction, allowing me the rare opportunity to prioritize family and explore future endeavors." The chief started her career with the Phoenix PD in 1989 and was appointed as chief in 2016. (ABC15 Arizona in Phoenix)
- Workers in Phoenix saw the nation's largest wage increase compared to this time last year, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The report showed that wages went up by 6.4 percent in the Phoenix metro area between 2021 and 2022. This number is greater than the nationwide average increase of 5 percent. Despite the increase, many workers in Arizona and across the country are still impacted by the effects of inflation. (Arizona's Family)
- A Phoenix tutoring program is putting out the call for volunteers to read with local students. Due to the pandemic, the AARP's Read-On Phoenix program is reportedly down by about 100 tutors.
