The 3rd Annual Portal to the Past Festival by Cultural C​oalition, Inc. at Pueblo Grande Museum is happening this Sunday, October 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. This free family friendly event is perfect for people of all ages who love to learn about the cultures, art, and history of Arizona. The festival features a variety of indigenous artisans, music and dance performances, craft activities and talks celebrating Arizona's most precious resource: Water.

 Join the fun and spend the afternoon at this outdoor festival dancing, creating, and connecting while exploring Arizona's rich water history and culture.

AFTER THE FESTIVAL: Continue learning about the history of water in Arizona with these additional programs happening in October and November at Pueblo Grande Museum.October 20 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.: The Gila and The Salt - Our River StoriesA performance with masks narrating the stories of Arizonans in both the Salt and Gila Rivers throughout the centuries of water use in the Valley by artist and storyteller, and 2021 Arizona Humanities Award Recipient Zarco Guerrero.November 3 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.: Water is Life: Panel DiscussionA community conversation about the use of water in Arizona communities, its history, and the present situation of water sources in the Valley with panelists from Gila and Salt River Indian Communities, Salt River Project Research, Archives and Heritage Section, and moderated by the Friends ofPueblo Grande Museum.

 ABOUT THE PORTAL FESTThe 2019 inaugural Portal Festival unveiled the “Portal to the Past" art installation, a winner of the New Arizona Prize Water Public Art Challenge. The piece, designed by local Arizona artist Zarco Guerrero, is a sculptural gate that incorporates images acknowledging the importance of the complex canal system created by the Ancestral Sonoran Desert People that we still use today. The “Portal" is located along the Grand Canalscape offering access to the grounds of Pueblo Grande Museum and an interpretive trail highlighting the accomplishments of the first inhabitants of the Valley of the Sun.

Explore the Ancient Heart of Phoenix

Pueblo Grande Museum is a 1,500-year-old archaeological site once inhabited by the Ancestral Sonoran Desert People (Hohokam). Voted a Phoenix Point of Pride and listed as a National Historic Landmark, the Museum offers two accessible interpretive trails on the prehistoric village site. Visitors view a platform mound, ballcourt and irrigation canals. Indoor exhibits feature artifacts from the site and hands-on activities for kids. The museum provides preservation, education, and collaborative interpretation of the cultural history of the Phoenix area and is managed by the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department.

Throughout the year, Pueblo Grande Museum has programming for adults, children, and families, which include archaeology classes for kids, arts and crafts workshops, hikes, and lectures.  The Museum also holds annual events, such as the Indian Market, children's summer programs, a Native Art & Rug Auction, Ancient Technology Day and more to please all ages and interests! Museum Hours:  May through September – Open Tuesday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. CLOSED Sunday and Monday and most major holidays.
