Diamondbacks' Opening Day Win Spoils Historic Effort By Bumgarner

Come from behind win in the bottom of the ninth gets 2017 off to a good start.

For five innings, the game belonged to pitcher Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants. It looked like the Diamondbacks were picking off where they left off last year when they lost 93 games.

Bumgarner became the first pitcher to hit two home runs on Opening Day - one went 415 feet - and retired the first 16 batters he faced.

But in the sixth inning, Arizona finally had their Spring awakening and came to life for new manager Torey Lovullo, who had been the bench coach for the Red Sox.

Four hits and three runs later, the inning was over and the Diamondbacks had tied the game at three.

Centerfielder AJ Pollock, who spent much of last year on the DL because of a fractured elbow two days before Opening Day, showed he is back with his first home run of the year and two key singles.

Zack Greinke, while giving up a home run to Bumgarner, did well in his debut, striking out four and scattering five hits over five innings.

And while the Giants built the lead back up, the D'backs - down 5-4 in with two out in the bottom of the ninth, came back to win.

They'll have a chance to build on that when they play the Giants again Tuesday evening.

It's a tough April for Arizona with 16 of their next 19 games against teams that made the playoffs last year. After the Giants, they host the American League champion Cleveland Indians. And then a trip west that includes visits to the Dodgers and Giants.
