Good Samaritan Killed On L-202 Helping After Accident: ICYMI

One of a few people who stopped at an L-202 accident, trying to divert traffic, was hit and killed.

MESA, AZ — A good Samaritan was killed Thursday on the Loop 202 in Mesa, according to reports, while trying to help divert traffic around an accident. It happened just before 11 a.m.

An SUV exiting eastbound Loop 202 at Recker Road lost control, AZ Central reported Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Quentin Mehr as saying. The SUV went down an embankment into the center wall. A couple lanes were blocked, so a few motorists stopped to help out.

Three people stopped, two of them working to divert traffic from the emergency and HOV lanes, which were blocked, AZ Central reported.

That's when another car swerved into the emergency lane, then swerved out into the HOV lane, hitting a man who was trying to divert traffic.

He was taken to a hospital where he died soon before 2 p.m., according to AZ Central.

There were no other injuries reported. Identities have not been released.
