Jim Cox environmental warning for commercial refrigeration

Most energy is used by industrial and commercial systems. Jim Cox, CEO of Gaskets Rock warms that

Commercial refrigeration has changed a great deal with more retailers opting for energy efficient solutions for their businesses. There is a global movement towards energy conservation and reducing the carbon footprint of businesses. Commercial refrigerators cost big money and if high-quality gaskets are not used, not only does it mean that money is wasted but much more energy is used.

Jim Cox, CEO of Gaskets Rock, has seen companies buying expensive equipment and then using poor quality gaskets to try and save costs far too often. His company was involved recently in replacing gaskets in a large and busy commercial kitchen in America. The company found that cold air was leaking out of refrigerators within a month of purchase.

He says that using high-quality gaskets makes equipment last longer, reduces energy costs significantly and ensures food quality. It also has significant environmental benefits because of the reduction in energy usage.

Saves costs

It’s in the best interest of businesses to reduce energy usage if they want to remain competitive. Commercial refrigerators have to keep cold constantly and operate 24 hours a day, day after day. They need to have high quality, tightly sealed gaskets to keep cold air from leaking out. The smallest of cracks in the seal can form a leak, causing refrigerated air from inside to leak out. Moist air can also enter the refrigerator space, with frost building up inside and having a harmful effect on the whole system.

The refrigerator has to work harder to keep the temperature constant. When it works harder, it uses much more energy. A high-quality gasket means less energy is used and this translates into cost savings every month when energy bills are paid. Refrigerators may account for a large percentage of total energy use of a business, so an energy-efficient refrigerator can make a significant difference to costs.

Keeps food fresh and safe

If cold air leaks out of a refrigerator and food spoils, it could cost a company substantial revenue in lost stock. It could also cause problems for violation of health and safety regulations. The food code violation most frequently found by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is temperature abuse. This does not arise so much from operational issues but from the use of inappropriate refrigeration equipment.

The FDA Food Code details the temperature and length of time foods can be maintained in refrigeration. If gaskets are defective and a refrigerator is battling to maintain a constant temperature, this code can be violated because the temperature falls outside of the requirement.

Saves time

Many commercial kitchens run the risk of waiting long periods for high, quality gaskets. They may feel they can’t afford the wait and settle for inferior products. This is counterproductive because using these inferior products means they have to be replaced way too often. When high-quality gaskets are used, they are long lasting and perform better. Not having to change them frequently can save a great deal of time.

Saves energy

Equipment like commercial refrigerators consumes large amounts of energy. When the gaskets fail, and refrigerators lose cool air, they have to work much harder and draw more electricity in the process. If they are working inefficiently, they can use up to three times more energy.

When ENERGY STAR began labeling products, energy consumption became a significant aspect when considering a purchase. Energy efficiency is one of the top criteria for selecting equipment like commercial refrigerators. Businesses are placing more value on energy efficiency. As customers, we probably reach into a commercial refrigerator in a grocery store a few times a week, but we don’t think about how much energy is being consumed to keep items cold.

When commercial refrigerators are energy-efficient, they can play a significant role in reducing energy consumption and protecting the environment. The proper functioning of the gaskets is an important part of making them energy efficient.

Jim Cox warns that sometimes the greatest gains in energy efficiency come from dealing with issues hiding in plain sight. Commercial refrigeration is one of those issues. Taking care of the environment in this way has a side benefit too – it makes a business more competitive and more profitable. More people want to support businesses that are seen to support environmental protection.
