Keep It Cool Phoenix: Help Reduce Energy Waste While Back to School Shopping

The nonprofit Generation180 created the Keep It Cool campaign to decrease retail energy waste across communities nationwide.

During the summertime and for the back to school shopping season, it’s common to see stores in Phoenix with their door propped open, streaming the cold air conditioning outside. These open doors are wasting a lot of energy. This costly habit pollutes the atmosphere with 2.2 tons of carbon dioxide and other substances into the air each summer.

To help stop this wasteful practice, the nonprofit Generation180 created the Keep It Cool campaign to decrease retail energy waste across communities nationwide. Participating in the Keep It Cool campaign is easy and anonymous! Phoenix residents can use Facebook Messenger to contact Generation 180 and drop a pin on a map when they see a retailer’s door open or closed. From there, Generation 180 will reach out to the retailer with energy saving tips and best practices.

In fact, if all businesses in Biltmore Fashion Park right here in Phoenix kept their doors closed for the summer, it would save enough electricity to power the average house for 20 years.

“The success of Keep It Cool depends on consumers getting into action and sharing their activities with their friends and social networks,” says Susan Klees, campaign director. “We encourage everyone who cares about the environment to join in our effort this summer – it is an easy and fun way to make a difference and breathe easier in your own community.”
