Light Rail Could Be Coming To West Phoenix: Here’s Your Chance To Weigh In

Residents can stop by June 24 at Maryvale High School to ask questions and share input on the proposed project.

PHOENIX, AZ — A proposed light rail extension that would bring transit deeper into west Phoenix is moving into its next round of community input, and residents will have a chance later this month to weigh in on the project.

Valley Metro and the City of Phoenix are hosting an open house on the West Phoenix Extension from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, at the Maryvale High School Cafeteria, 3415 N. 59th Ave.

The event will be informal, with no formal presentation, and residents can drop in anytime during the two-hour window to speak one-on-one with project staff.

The proposed extension would add about 10 miles of light rail and connect the area to the existing Valley Metro Rail system.

The route would branch off at either Indian School Road and Central Avenue or 19th Avenue and Camelback Road, then run west along Indian School Road to 75th Avenue, turn south to Thomas Road and end at the Desert Sky Transit Center at 79th Avenue and Thomas Road.

For Maryvale and nearby neighborhoods that have historically had fewer transit options, the project could mark a major change in how residents travel across the Valley.

No construction timeline has been announced.

Project staff will also collect contact information, language preferences and preferred communication methods so residents can stay updated as planning continues.
