Man Kills Wife And Infant Daughter In Phoenix Home: Police

PHOENIX, AZ — Police say a man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of his estranged wife and their 11-month-old daughter Monday night in west Phoenix.

Officers arrested Louis Mouton III, 34, on Monday night. Phoenix police say Mouton came to an apartment in the 2500 block of 83rd Avenue before 9 p.m. to speak with his estranged wife, Lanae Mouton, 32, about their relationship.

Police said Louis and Lanae had a discussion outside the residence. Lanae walked back inside, and Louis kicked in the door and fired several gunshots.

The shots hit Lanae and their 11-month-old daughter Ava, police said. The victims were taken to local hospitals and pronounced dead.

Louis was still at the residence when police arrived and was taken into custody, according to police.

Phoenix media asked Cole about how these types of crimes affect police officers in a news conference, which was streamed live on Facebook by ABC15.

"Any loss of life is traumatic for our first responders, both police and fire," he said, adding that both departments have resources for employees who investigate distressing events.

"Many of the first responders you see out here, we're fathers and mothers ourselves. So, dealing with something like that, it can be a life-changing traumatic event for those first responders."

Cole said several people called police about the incident, but could not say who made the calls.

Cole said October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and said the police department has resources and referrals posted online.
