New Playground Opens In Washington Park, Phoen​ix

City of Phoenix District 5 Councilwoman Betty Guardado joined a small group of community members and city staff in Washington Park on Wednesday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of a new playground.

Completed earlier this month, the playground includes play structures for those ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12, as well as toddler and youth swings. It also has a unique zipline amenity. The project cost $230,000 and was funded by the voter-approved Phoenix Parks and Preserve Initiative (PPPI).

In addition to the playground, the 57-acre Washington Park (located at 6655 N. 23rd Ave.) provides the community with a parkour-style challenge course, WalkPHX path, dog park and a variety of other amenities. The park was built in 1964 and is part of a complex that includes the Washington Activity Center, Washington Pool and Phoenix Tennis Center.

Being outdoors is important for health and wellness, and the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department encourages residents to get outside, get exercise and practice responsible physical distancing while exploring all that the city's park system has to offer. City of Phoenix parks, hiking trails and golf courses have remained open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, but use of some park amenities is being restricted.
