Here are the top three stories today in Phoenix:

  1. The National Labor Relation Board has petitioned Starbucks Corporation to reinstate three union activists at its Phoenix location, alleging that they engaged in unfair labor practices. This is the latest blow to the coffee chain as locations nationwide seek to unionize. Federal labor officials allege that Starbucks retaliated against employees who sought to unionize by disciplining, suspending, and discharging one employee among other actions. On Saturday, a Starbucks spokesperson indicated that the company disagreed with the labor board's accusations and noted an investigation found the employees violated policies and, in some cases, state law. (ABC News)
  2. Police are searching for the person who shot a woman and a man at a Phoenix freeway underpass on Friday evening near 26th Avenue and Cactus Road. According to police, Nissa Thomas, 35, and a man got into a fight with two men which led to one of those men shooting both of them. Thomas died at the hospital and the 31-year-old man who was with her is expected to live. If you have any information about the shooting, contact Silent Witness. (Arizona's Family)
  3. Towards the conclusion of Earth Week and Earth Day, the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department announced a $2 million sponsorship from Republic Services, Inc. The sponsorship will help fund a one-acre sustainable oasis featuring 33 native desert plants and shaded walking and seating areas. Construction of the one-acre Republic Services Garden has begun and the project is expected to be completed in time for Phoenix's hosting of Super Bowl LVII in February 2023. (AZ Big Media)
