Here are the top three stories in Phoenix today:

  1. A police officer was involved in a shooting at a north Phoenix hotel on Friday. According to officials, a security guard at the Red Roof Inn near Interstate 17 and Bell Road noticed a man who had trespassed before in the area with a handgun. The man with the handgun had allegedly pistol-whipped another man in the area. Police officers chased the man through the hotel, firing live bullets and beanbag rounds at the suspect. The suspect was struck by beanbag rounds and not lethal ammunition. No officers were harmed. (FOX 10 News Phoenix)
  2. Looking to see a different side of the Desert Botanical Garden? Flashlight Nights take place at the Desert Botanical Garden every Saturday through Sep. 3. Guests of all ages are invited to check out the event, where guests explore the garden at night with flashlights. The garden also provides pop-up musical, dance, and cultural experiences throughout the summer. Click the link to see a full listing of dates and events. (The Arizona Republic)
  3. Phoenix Mercury superstar Brittney Griner, who has been detained in Russia since February on drug charges, has an American doctor's note recommending she use medical cannabis to treat pain, her lawyer said at her trial on Friday. Medical marijuana is illegal in Russia; however, Griner's attorney argued that the athlete's permission to use it was issued on behalf of the Arizona Department of Health. Griner, 31, pleaded guilty last week to having vape canisters containing cannabis oil, but said she had no criminal intent and asked the court for mercy. Her next hearing is Jul. 26, and her lawyers say they expect her detention to conclude in early August. (Phoenix Patch)
