Here are the top four stories in Phoenix today:
- On early Wednesday morning, one person died from a wrong-way collision on I-10, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The car was headed east in the westbound lanes of I-10 and collided with a commercial truck, a department spokesperson said. Interstate 10 west was temporarily closed following the crash but has since reopened. (Phoenix Patch)
- Two local nonprofit organizations, Chicanos Por La Causa and One N Ten (stylized in all lowercase letters), will receive nearly a million dollars over the next four years to help prevent the spread of HIV among younger Latino men. Jimmy Thomason, executive director of Aunt Rita's Foundation, says the money will be used to focus on PrEP navigation. PrEP Navigators will help support individuals who want to access the pill that can help reduce the chances of contracting HIV. (KJZZ)
- The Phoenix City Council has approved the addition of 33 new positions in the Phoenix Police Department. Amid staffing shortages, the department hopes the 25 positions for Civilian Investigators and 8 positions for Police Assistants will allow officers to respond to higher priority crimes. Since Wednesday, the department has already received about 560 total applications. (Arizona's Family)
- On Tuesday night, firefighters extinguished a fire that broke out at a home near South Mountain in Phoenix. Neighbors told firefighters that the home was vacant and under renovation. Firefighters were not injured and investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. (FOX 10 News Phoenix)
