Here are the top three stories in Phoenix today:

  1. According to Phoenix police, a Phoenix father shot himself and then shot his son on Sunday morning. Amir Vetry, 53, was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital; his six-year-old son, who was also taken to a local hospital, is expected to survive his injuries. Police were called at around 9:30 a.m. Sunday near North 24th Street and East Cactus Road after the boy's parents got into a physical fight. As the mother ran for help, witnesses recall hearing shots fired inside the house. (Phoenix Patch)
  2. After weekend temperatures that reached the mid-90s, the National Weather Service says today's high of 70 degrees with a 90% chance of rain will put a break in the hot weather. From the west, a large storm system is bringing rain and wind, reports Phoenix weather bureau meteorologist Chris Kuhlman. Look out for anywhere from one-tenth to one-quarter inches of rainfall across the Valley, the majority of it likely in the east and north. (KTAR.com)
  3. Looking to adopt a furry friend and lifelong companion? Each week, Patch and Petfinder compile a list of all pets put up for adoption in the Phoenix area. Check out these Phoenix animal shelters for pets looking to settle in a forever home. (Phoenix Patch)
