Phoenix Hiker’s Death On South Mountain Trail Sparks Fundraiser For Family

PHOENIX, AZ — The death of a Phoenix hiker during last weekend's extreme heat has prompted an outpouring of support for his family.

The family of Richard "Stan" Fletcher, the 61-year-old who died after setting out on a South Mountain Park hike, is remembering him as a devoted husband, loving father and passionate outdoorsman.

Fletcher never returned from an early morning hike Saturday, prompting a missing-person report that evening. A cyclist later found him unresponsive on the National Trail, where Phoenix Fire crews pronounced him dead.

Authorities said there were no signs of trauma.

In the days since his death, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Fletcher’s wife, Stephanie, and their family.

The fundraiser, organized by Cheyenne Blake, describes Fletcher as a faithful husband, devoted father and generous friend whose kindness touched everyone he met.

Organizers say donations will help ease the family’s financial burden as they grieve and honor Fletcher’s memory. Those unable to contribute are encouraged to share the fundraiser and keep the Fletcher family in their thoughts.

As of Tuesday, the fundraiser had raised $11,004 toward its $15,000 goal.

Investigators believe Fletcher’s death may have been related to extreme heat or a medical emergency. They have found no evidence of foul play, and the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office is continuing to investigate the official cause and manner of death.
