Phoenix Traffic: Suspicious Package Shut I-17 By New River

A suspicious device on the highway shut northbound traffic for hours.

NEW RIVER, AZ – Traffic on northbound I-17 was shut down for hours as police investigated a suspicious package. It was an unwelcome to start to the weekly commute for many.

Arizona Department of Public Safety says that the package was found by Department of Transportation worker at milepost 232 north of Phoenix.

The package was found around 9 a.m. and traffic was finally reopened around two hours later.

Arizona Department of Transportation says that traffic is backed up south of Anthem.

No word yet on what was in the package.
