Here are the top three stories today in Phoenix:

  1. Gas prices in metro Phoenix have reached a record average of $4.75 per gallon as of Tuesday. Diesel fuel also hit a new high of $5.47. "It's going to be hard for crude oil prices to fall. Unfortunately, that means consumers are going to continue to face these higher prices at the pump," said Aldo Vazquez with AAA Arizona who said the Russian war with Ukraine is the main disruptor in the global oil supply at this time. (KTAR.com)
  2. A death row inmate is set to be executed today after efforts to stop his execution have failed. Clarence Dixon's execution will be the first in Arizona after the 2014 lethal injection of Joseph Wood, whose lawyers said was botched. Dixon was implicated with DNA evidence for the Jan. 7, 1978 murder of Deana Bowdoin in her Tempe apartment. He was sentenced to death in 2008. As of Tuesday evening, there has been no decision to overturn Dixon's execution based on his mental illness. (Phoenix Patch)
  3. An argument between three men at a Phoenix gas station led to a deadly shooting on Monday, May 9. According to police, officers arrived at 35th Street and McDowell Road where they found one man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Investigators said two men fled from the scene after the first man was shot. The investigation is ongoing. (FOX 10 News Phoenix)
